BBC TOP GEAR INDIA EDITION

This blog has been migrated to wordpress, and is using the same address

I was out grocery shopping 2 days back and noticed the BBC Top Gear magazine's India edition. I had not seen that before and picked it up out of curiosity.

The first thing that stuck me was if it is really the Indian edition! As if to prove that, there is an Indian editorial board and there are some little mentions about cars available in India. Discount that and it looked as if you bought it somewhere in the west. One of the few articles on India vehicle was too outdated to be there - it was a comparison between Indigo, Esteem and Ikon. I finished the entire mag in less than 10 minutes and put it away! I think the people of Top Gear will be better off reselling their European edition as such, or at least never bother to sell the mag in India.

seriously...when will they realise that u can't drive magazine sales by showcasing porsches and ferraris...we don't go for continental meals every other day..our spicy fares are more dear to our hearts..looks like they think that the microcosm that is south bombay is the real india...its high time they woke up..

I agree with you. There is hardly anything practical in this magazine.Unless they localise the content they will not have much success. They need to learn from Autocar India.

There are certain things in life
That are beyond my comprehension
Like the relation between some people & their cars
Is really worth a mention

Don't you feel these car owners
Are cases on the border
Of definitely some sort of
Personality disorder?

Why else would someone write
His name on the number-plate in bold
If he did not think he was worth
The car's weight in gold?

I paid for this beauty
I feel like such a star
Yes, yes, yes I am
The proud owner of this car!

Snobbery or attention-seeking
What would you call this?
I, for one, would consider it
An identity crisis

Then there are some of those
Who want their families to know
How dear they are to them
They want their love to show

So now the whole world knows
Its there for all to see
That their dedication is to one
Whose name’s on the rear windscreen

But how do they make others aware
That they are such pious souls?
Or whether they are romantics at heart?
How do they achieve these goals?

Their temperaments & choices
Become very clear
By the kind of tune that plays
When they put the reverse gear

What also becomes clear is
That they are quite inconsiderate
Towards those who they disturb untimely
And become targets of hate

I used to think that the choice of a car
Just reflects a person’s likes
But now I see that, on the whole, it is
A mirror of people & their psyches

It displays to countless others
Traits that one would not have shown
In public otherwise
But to each, his own

How others associate themselves
With their beloved cars is their choice
The bumper sticker on my ‘800’ says-
My other car is a Rolls Royce!
