NEW REPLACEMENT FOR ZEN IS MR WGAON?

This blog has been migrated to wordpress, and is using the same address

Only a few days back, I was musing about what went wrong with the new remodeled Maruti zen that was launched a few years ago. The news is abuzz these days that Maruti has already zeroed in on a replacement they were planning for sometime.

MR Wagon, a Suzuki small car that was sold in Japan a few years ago will be sold in the name of Zen in India. Obviously Maruti does not want to kill a successful brand name. They say MR Wagon is not a relative of the Wagon R, but a look at the images and specifications indicates otherwise. It seems to be another tall car like the Wagon R and I doubt if it is a good alternative to the feminine looking Zen. While the new MR Wagon is being readied for the Indian market, check with your Maruti dealer, you may get some fat discounts on the Zen, with Maruti trying to clear up the inventory.

Also - June issue of Autocar India magazine has a first look at MR Wagon.

I came across your blog during a search. I thot it was cool, until i saw this note of Zen replacement.

If you are aware, the Zen in India is a previous avataar of Alto. Alto is the next-gen zen. Unfortunately, Maruti lost on the opportunity to replace zen with Alto (just the VX). That would have been an ideal move. THey messed that up. And now, its going to be difficult....

Yes, and I think the story is bigger than that. What was named Zen in India was sold as Alto in Japanese and European markets. And yes, the current Alto is future version of the same car that was sold in Japan, scaled down with a smaller engine. I think Maruti did the right thing though the names were messed up. They desperately needed a replecement for the ageing 800, and when the smaller Alto happened in Japan, they just stripped it down a bit and promoted it as a replacement for 800.

Infact, when Alto was initially launche d in India, it was a more expensive car and was really going nowhere. But things changed a bit after it was scaled and down and the price was reduced drastically.

Well, the naming mess up is so bad, it is confusing anyway and I seem to be adding to it... Probably it needs writing more in detail.
